About Purim
Purim is one of the most colorful and joyful Jewish holidays. The story of Esther is read out loud and the audience makes noise, stomping their feet and using noisemakers to drown out the name of the villain, Haman. Costumes are encouraged and there are contests, games and lots of fun to celebrate this holiday.
It is traditional to give gifts of food, especially fruit, nuts and Hamentashen to friends, family and neighbors.
There are four requirements (Mitzvot) at Purim
- Reading the Book of Esther out loud
- Being festive and rejoicing
- Giving gifts of fruits and nuts
- Offering gifts to the poor
